For Alexander McQueen’s ss 01 show, models walked like mentally ill asylum patients. The show, presented within a two-way mirror box which didn’t allow the models to see the outside while it was happening, was purposely delayed by 2 hours to enforce the audience to look at their reflections. The looks were a mix of highly-wearable and elegant tailored suits and evening dresses as well as avant-garde theatrical pieces such as the Hitchcock inspired gown made with taxidermy birds clinched to the model’s head. Inspiration in Asian culture as well as in nature was visible in many looks, such as gowns made from mussels or flowing feathers. The show finale revealed a woman lying inside a smaller glass box, filled with moths, representing beauty being found everywhere, even in the most grotesque.
